Description
Key Information about the L239 Blue Panaque Pleco:
Scientific Name: Baryancistrus beggini.
Origin: Native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia.
Appearance: While it’s called the “Blue Panaque,” the body coloration is often a dark brown to charcoal with blue hues in the fins, and some have small white spots, giving them a “starry night” appearance. The amount of blue coloration can vary.
Size: They typically reach about 3-4 inches in length.
Temperament: Generally peaceful, but like many plecos, they can be territorial towards other plecos, especially in smaller tanks.
Tank Requirements:
Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons, but 50 gallons is recommended for a single fish. Larger tanks are better for housing multiple fish or providing more space for territory.
Aquascape: Needs plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, rocks, and caves. Driftwood is important for foraging on microorganisms.
Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel is best to prevent damage to their delicate barbels.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 74-86°F (23-30°C).
pH: 6.5-7.5.
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5-15 dGH).
Water Flow: Prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow.
Filtration: Strong filtration is recommended as they produce a good amount of waste.
Diet: Omnivorous, but lean towards a herbivorous diet. They should be fed:
High-quality sinking pellets and algae wafers.
Blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber.
Occasional protein such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.
They also forage on microorganisms and leftover food on the substrate.
Compatibility: Can be kept with peaceful, community fish that thrive in similar water conditions. Avoid housing them with large, predatory fish.
Breeding: Breeding in captivity is challenging but possible. They require specific environmental conditions and may need caves to spawn.
Important Notes:
Despite their common name, L239 Blue Panaque Plecos are not actually members of the Panaque genus.
They are known to be sensitive to poor water quality and need a well-maintained tank.
Providing a varied diet and maintaining a clean environment are crucial for their health and vibrant coloration.
