Discus Fish Care Guide:
Discus fish, often called the “King of the Aquarium,” require specialized care to thrive. Here’s a guide to their needs:
1. Tank Setup and Environment:
Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is required, but 75 gallons or larger is recommended.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 82-86°F (28-30°C), according to Green Aqua.
pH: 6.0-7.0, says Aqueon.
Hardness: 1-4° dKH (18-70 ppm), notes Aqueon.
Filtration: Robust filtration is essential for pristine water quality.
Décor:
Include broadleaf plants and driftwood for hiding places.
Fine sand or smooth gravel substrate.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred.
Water Changes: Regular water changes (10-25% weekly) are vital for maintaining water quality.
2. Feeding and Diet:
Omnivorous: Discus eat both plant matter and small invertebrates.
Diet Variety: Offer a mix of:
High-quality discus flakes and granules.
Frozen and live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp).
Some vegetables like spirulina flakes.
Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts 2-3 times daily.
3. Tank Mates:
Discus are generally peaceful but can be aggressive towards each other.
Suitable Tank Mates: Cardinal tetras, neon tetras, rummynose tetras, clown loaches, dwarf cichlids.
Avoid: Aggressive or overly active fish that might stress discus.
4. Health and Disease Prevention:
Quarantine New Fish: Quarantine new fish before adding them to the main tank.
Monitor Water Quality: Regularly test and maintain water parameters.
Observe for Signs of Stress: Watch for changes in color, behavior, or appetite.
5. Breeding Discus (Advanced):
Specific Water Parameters: Breeding requires softer, more acidic water.
Patience and Observation: Breeding discus can be challenging and requires close observation.
Important Note: Discus keeping is not for beginners. They are sensitive to water conditions and require diligent care and attention.
