Description
The Menarambo Cichlid, also known as the Pinstripe Damba (Paretroplus menarambo), is a critically endangered species of cichlid fish endemic to Madagascar.
Key Characteristics:
Appearance: They are a large, deep-bodied cichlid with a distinctive pattern of vague black bars on their body.
Size: They can grow up to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in length.
Habitat: Found in slow-moving or still waters like lakes and large ponds in the Sofia River basin of northwestern Madagascar.
Diet: They are omnivores, consuming small invertebrates, insects, and plant matter in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept prepared foods like pellets and flakes, supplemented with frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered due to habitat destruction, competition from introduced species (like Tilapia), and overfishing.
Care in Aquariums:
Tank Size: A large tank (at least 100 gallons or 400 liters) is recommended.
Water Parameters: They prefer well-filtered water with a pH at or above neutral. Temperature should be maintained between 72-82°F (22-28°C).
Tank Setup: A sandy substrate is preferred, as they sift through it for food. Rocks, driftwood, and other hiding places should be provided.
Social Behavior: They are best kept in small groups to replicate their natural shoaling behavior.
Compatibility: They can be aggressive and territorial, especially as adults, so tankmates should be chosen carefully.
Breeding: If breeding is desired, a species-only aquarium is recommended.
Conservation Importance:
They are part of captive breeding programs to ensure their survival.
Maintaining them in captivity can contribute to the preservation of this unique species.
